Sharp Introduces Low-Power IGZO Display

Sharp has set a display target for mass production in 2017, which will reduce the power consumption of smartphones and tablets. The MEMS display, which is being developed based on the alliance with Qualcomm subsidiaries in 2012, can be used on smartphones and tablets, as well as on large-size displays.
Compared to current liquid crystal displays, MEMS-IGZO technology can operate in a minus 30 °C environment, providing better color purity and color gamut, and has extremely low power consumption. Depending on the usage, the device can be run twice as long as a new monitor is used instead of the LCD. And is a programmable display, which can be adjusted according to whether the user is watching a video or an e-book, such as changing the power usage. Most display technologies use the same power source, regardless of content, color gamut, depth, and fidelity, and can be changed depending on usage.
Power efficiency will be an important feature of next-generation displays because the resolution is also basically reaching the limits of the human eye. And Sharp's partner Qualcomm has long been trying to make this technology popular and commercial. At the conference, Sharp demonstrated the latest MEMS-IGZO prototype, a 7-inch tablet computer, displaying a variety of images and text. As the screen changes from a color photo to a grayscale text, the reading in the device next to the meter drops.
