Stanford University says that optical links can change how computers work

Stanford engineers say that their new prism may mean that computers will probably use optics instead of electricity to carry data. The new prism may look like a bar code, but it can fundamentally change how the computer works. Prismatic optical link devices can split the beam into different colors and angles such as bends or right angles. Vuckovic, a professor of electrical engineering who led the study, said in today's scientific report: "Light can carry more data than electricity, and it requires less energy transmission."
In previous work teams developed an algorithm that automates the design of optical structures, enabling them to create previously unimaginable nanostructures to control light. Engineers have now adopted this algorithm to design, build, and test links that are compatible with existing fiber optic networks. When the light beam is illuminated on the optical link, two different wavelengths of light will be separated to form a T-shape. This is a big step towards building a complete system that uses light to connect computer components instead of wires. Stanford's algorithm can design this structure on a laptop in just 15 minutes.
