From the LED sports lighting to see the indoor stadium lighting adjustment problems how to solve
Sports venues can create a richer and more attractive atmosphere by changing the color of the facility lighting. This practice is called color temperature adjustment. Although red, blue, or green light is used to illuminate the floor (also known as RGB adjustment), indoor sporting venues often employ more subtle applications that illuminate the white light to the venue to best show the game. Changing the color of white light in space is called white balance.
White light exists in many different shades and its unit of measure is K. The lower the K value, the warmer and yellower the white light tone is. For example, the light emitted by an incandescent bulb has a color temperature of 2800K. A higher color temperature indicates that the white light has a cooler, bluish hue. It is generally believed that 5600K is the daylight color temperature at noon.
For a multi-purpose indoor venue, the color temperature of white light is an important consideration because different sporting events look better under different white light conditions. The wood tone of the basketball court and the exposed skin of the player appear more active under warm white lighting (around 4000K). However, in the 4000K light, hockey ice cubes appear dull and dirty, but when illuminated with 5600K lights, the ice hockey sticks appear crisp and clean.
Then, for stadiums hosting multiple events, using a single lighting system to achieve multi-colored white light is a challenge.
White Dimming Challenge in Indoor Areas
Most light sources and luminaires emit a white light in the target light. In the past, two different lighting systems were needed to light up the arena to create the best conditions for basketball and hockey matches while maintaining the lighting level of the playing field. Typically, this is accomplished by a metal halide system with a color temperature of approximately 5000K and a high pressure sodium lamp illumination system in the range of 2600K-2800K.
The two lighting systems must be used in coordination to obtain the desired light color on the court. For hockey games, only 5000K metal halide lamps can be used to illuminate the ice, creating the coolest color temperature the system can provide, but still not achieving the best 5600K. In order to improve the light color temperature of basketball games, some metal halide lamps are used in combination with high-pressure sodium systems. The mix of 5000K and 2700K lamps will produce a lighting color temperature on the court, falling somewhere in the range. This inaccurate and imperfect dual-system approach has long been the only choice for the arena to achieve white balance.
New LED Sports Lighting Solution
Advances in LED materials, design, and control have led LED lamps to emit different shades of white light. These toned LED sports lighting fixtures combine two different color temperature (3500K and 6500K) LED light sources, and then adjust the power into different color diodes to produce accurate color temperature. The multi-purpose arena can now display hockey in a 5600K environment, display basketball in a 4000K environment, and maintain optimal lighting levels in the playing field. All of this can be achieved with an energy-saving white LED sports lighting system.
