Bosch is seeking new lithium battery partners

"Because the Bosch Group and Samsung's DNA are not in tune with the cooperation, we are currently seeking new electrification partners after we broke up with Samsung." Recently, Bernd Bohr, chairman of the Bosch Group's automotive technology business, told reporters. This is the first time Bosch Group has stated that it will continue to seek new electrification partners and jointly develop battery technology.

In 2008, Bosch Group and Samsung each invested 50% to establish a joint venture. The two parties plan to invest 300 million to 400 million U.S. dollars in the next 5 years. Starting in 2011, they will mass-produce high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries that meet the requirements for hybrid or electric vehicles, and Worldwide sales. However, based on demand and other reasons, the joint venture company has not achieved profitability since its establishment four years ago. The two parties finally announced formal separation in September last year.

In view of high battery costs and limited battery life, there is still a lot of uncertainty in the marketization of electric vehicles. Bosch seeks to recover costs through economies of scale, which requires the integration of production and standardization of parts. "Through cooperation, we can not only expand our production scale, share R&D costs, but also increase our technological capabilities in the overall system. Therefore, we also need to seek new partners for the development of electrified integrated cooperation projects such as lithium battery," Bernd Bohr told reporters.

BerndBohr believes that in the next 10 years, electrified drive system vehicles will not be able to become mainstream, but no matter how diesel and gasoline drives improve efficiency, they will still belong to electric vehicles in the future. For this reason, the Bosch Group has invested 400 million euros in the electrification of powertrains each year to advance the arrival of the new energy automotive market.

The reporter was informed that by 2014, the Bosch Group will be committed to completing 30 powertrain electrification project orders, and this year, Bosch can complete 20 powertrain electrification project orders.
