The machine tool industry has made great achievements in the past decade. In 2009, China became the world's largest producer of metal processing machine tools for the first time. From 2002 to 2010, it ranked the world's largest consumer of metal processing machines and the largest importer of the world for nine consecutive years. In 2009, China became the world’s largest manufacturer of superhard materials. The total output of synthetic diamonds accounts for more than 90% of the world's total. However, as a whole, the industry is large but not strong, and the problems such as the lagging development of numerical control systems and key functional components have obviously restricted the sustainable development of the industry.

The "12th Five-Year Plan" period (2011 to 2015) is a crucial period for China to deepen its reform and opening up and speed up the transformation of its economic development mode.
