Environmental changes at home and abroad have prompted the petrochemical industry to accelerate the pace of reducing carbon emissions and developing a low-carbon economy. The transformation of foreign trade methods is becoming an important driver of carbon emission reduction. Objectively speaking, China has not taken the lead in the wave of global low-carbon economic development. When low-carbon products are increasingly used in foreign countries, the export of domestic high-carbon products has already faced greater resistance. Relying on expanding domestic demand to digest this part of backward production capacity is obviously contrary to the requirements of scientific development. The most fundamental thing is to develop a low-carbon economy and reduce the carbon intensity. In recent years, in response to climate change, China has frequently adopted policy measures such as adjusting industrial structure, improving energy efficiency, and developing cleaner and renewable energy sources. The Ministry of Environmental Protection revealed that it will introduce a carbon tax, and China's first low-carbon product certification cooperation project has also been signed.
In this context, the petrochemical industry is transforming its development approach through large-scale restructuring. Although China's coal-based energy structure will not change in the short term, the development and utilization of oil and natural gas are already very large scale, and the clean utilization of coal has also become the focus of the coal chemical industry technology.
The transformation of development methods requires strong support of technological progress. China is the world's largest producer of coal chemical products. Although chemical coal accounts for only 5% of the total consumption, the carbon dioxide emissions in the production of 1 ton of methanol are 8 times that of ordinary gasoline in terms of unit calorific value, and coal is directly In the process of liquefied diesel, the emission of carbon dioxide is 10 times that of ordinary diesel. In the process of indirect liquefied diesel of coal, the emission of carbon dioxide is 12 times that of ordinary diesel. The full utilization of coal needs to be based on low carbon emissions. It is necessary to develop high-carbon low-carbon energy utilization technologies and accelerate the development of high-efficiency coal conversion technologies, such as polygeneration, advanced combustion, and synthesis of low-carbon products, to reduce coal consumption. Strength, reduce the emission of pollutants in the conversion process; increase the research and development of coal and coal-based product pollutant emission control and treatment technologies, such as the capture, use and storage of carbon dioxide, to achieve the clean use of coal and coal-based products.
The recently released “Technical Support for the Adjustment and Revitalization of the Petrochemical Industry” has focused on the development of carbon emission reduction technologies. The petroleum refining sector has focused on energy saving and environmental protection technologies including reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and sulfur resource recovery; the chemical industry has relied on technological innovations. Starting from the fields of mineral fossil refining, garbage refining, and bio-refining, we will comprehensively promote a low-carbon economy.
At present, the concept of low-carbon economy has been introduced into the project construction. The Yantai Guotai Company's annual output of 200,000 tons of acetic acid and 1,000 tons of coal-based new-type gasifiers and their supporting projects were selected as "100th classic construction project for the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China." The company used its own intellectual property technology to break the monopoly of foreign countries and converted all the carbon dioxide generated into acetic acid raw materials, which could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 160,000 tons per year. This set a good example in the development of a low-carbon economy. The world’s single largest coal chemical project—the Shenhua Doosan’s Yulin circular economy coal comprehensive utilization project has been laid. Shenhua Company stated that it will strive to build the project into a production base for the development of recycling economy, promote the comprehensive utilization of coal, build a world-class and technologically advanced coal chemical industry base, and build a clean development, low-carbon economy model project.
The development of circular economy can promote carbon emission reduction. On the one hand, more efforts are made to recycle resources, and resources are reused to reduce the consumption of traditional energy sources. At the same time, making products with deeper and deeper products and extending the industrial chain has also become the basic principle for the development of petrochemical industrial parks featuring recycling economy. Therefore, by actively promoting the reduction, reuse, and recycling of resources, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the source and production process is one of the important means for the reduction of carbon emissions in the petrochemical industry.
On the other hand, carbon dioxide can be used as a resource. Carbon dioxide capture technology is an emerging technology for dealing with climate change in the world today. Under the vigorous advocacy of the country, China has reached an international advanced level in this field. The use of carbon dioxide to produce high-value-added environmentally friendly degradable plastics and the production of dimethyl carbonate from carbon dioxide have already been developed. Through processes such as oxo synthesis, carbon dioxide and hydrogen can be converted into methane, methanol, carbon fiber, engineering plastics, asphalt, and building materials. The green use of carbon dioxide, the development of green high-tech fine chemical industrial chain, increase product added value, reduce energy consumption, eliminate or significantly reduce carbon emissions from the source.
In the face of pressure, the petrochemical industry should see the opportunity to realize its potential, fully tap its own potential, and firmly consolidate its belief in scientific development, and thus become the main force for the development of the country’s low-carbon economy.
