Nanlin Da Jing Xian Jing Ming Tomb
The tomb owner is probably the descendant of Xu Da, the founder of the Ming Dynasty
Last year, on the campus of Nanjing Forestry University, the tomb of Xu Da's descendants, "Jin Yi Wei's Commanding and Doing Things," was discovered. The Jinling Evening News made detailed reports and caused a certain sensation. More than a year later, the archaeological department discovered a mysterious ancient tomb next to the “Jin Yi Wei Commanding Tomb”. Since the “Military Guardian Commander” was the descendant of Xu Da, the founding father of the Ming Dynasty, whether or not the ancient tomb was found to be associated with the famous Xu Da family, it was tempting to think about it. Yesterday, the reporter took the rain to visit the scene.
Tomb on the top of the tomb
The place where the ancient tomb is located is the hillside east of Nanjing Forestry University. The school was originally prepared to carry out construction work here. Due to the very important tombs that had been discovered here, the archaeological team of the Nanjing Museum entered the site ahead of schedule. After several days of exploration, archaeologists discovered that there was a large-scale tomb underground. Judging from the tomb bricks currently excavated, this is an ancient Ming tomb.
The reporter saw at the scene that the tomb was facing north and south. After preliminary excavation, a part of the tomb brick at the top of the tomb had been revealed. The exposed part of the ground is about 3 meters long and about 2 meters wide. According to archaeologists, as most of the ancient tombs are still buried under the soil, its concrete structure and construction scale are not yet certain. Whether or not epitaphs or precious funerary objects will be discovered remains to be further excavated.
The seizure of the ancient tomb attracted many students and citizens in the vicinity. The police also rushed to the scene and set up a cordon.
This is a tomb with two families
"I think the tomb of this tomb should be the descendant of Xu Da!" said a student of Zhao Lin who likes to study Ming History. According to the reporter’s understanding of archaeological experts, Zhao’s guess is somewhat reasonable.
There are two family cemeteries of the Ming Dynasty's two prestigious founding fathers, the Xu Da family tomb and the Li Wenzhong family tomb. Xu Da Family Tomb is centered on Xu Da Cemetery of Zhongshan King. After the founding of New China, the Nanjing Cultural Relics and Custodial Committee once excavated the tombs of Sun Daqin, the third generation of Xu Da, and Xu Xu, the fifth generation of Xu Da, in 1969 and 1976. They are also located near Nanlin University. At the time, archaeologists discovered that the body of the dead in Xu Hao’s tomb was still intact, and rich cultural relics were unearthed in both tombs.
In April last year, archaeologists found a Ming Dynasty couple buried two-chamber brick tomb on the campus of Nanlin University. After excavation, it was determined that the tomb was the sixth generation grandchild of Xu Da and Xu Junxu, the conductor of Nanjing Jin Yiwei. Experts found two epitaphs, a white clay pot and a blue glazed plum vase in the tomb. According to reports, Xu Junxu was a man of Hongzhi and Jiajing during the Ming dynasty. The blue-glazed plum vase buried in the tomb was of a very high value. It has been treasured as a pavilion and is housed in the boutique hall of the Nanjing Museum “Yutang Jiazhi”.
The other two sets of precious cultural relics collected by the Nanjing Museum - the Yunlong ribbon strip plate and the lion strip pattern amber strip plate are also from the Ming Dynasty tomb plaza in the Ming Dynasty tomb, is considered very likely and Xu Da family tomb or Li Wenzhong family tomb related.
Archaeological work suspended due to typhoon
"If this ancient tomb belongs to the Xu Da family's tomb and has not been robbed, there should be a large amount of precious and rich funerary artifacts in the tomb," said an industry fan.
According to the reporter's knowledge, there should be several Ming Dynasty tombs near the ancient tomb, but unfortunately, because of the typhoon, there was heavy rain in Nanjing for two days. If archaeology continues, it is likely to cause the tomb to collapse. Therefore, the excavation of the Ming Dynasty tomb may be suspended for several days. Whether this tomb belongs to Xu Da family tomb, "Jinling Evening News" will continue to carry out archaeological excavations.
